The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated and professional individual to provide GIS expertise to support evidence-based planning and decision-making by mapping relevant ecological and built infrastructure, assessing infrastructure risks, and producing spatial products for the Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) Project.

This position requires a degree in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Post-graduate qualification in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 4 years of work experience in relevant field, with data curation, management and analysis skills. 

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: Expected to travel, Geographical Information Systems Training, South African Council for Natural Scientific Profession (SACNASP) or South African Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors (PLATO) registration advantageous.  Must be in possession of a valid driver’s licence.


Key Performance Responsibilities include:
  • Conduct spatial data acquisition and mapping to support project outcomes;
  • Perform spatial analysis to support project outcomes;
  • Provide GIS support and guidance to district teams and implementing partners to ensure delivery of outputs and promote integration across outcomes; and
  • Contribute to human capital development
