The Biodiversity Biobank South Africa, which is hosted by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual responsible for providing both the technical and administrative support required to ensure the daily operations of the Biobank. This includes platform provision for both external clients and internal departments with regards to  all sample submissions, sample collection, processing and banking.
 
This position requires a National Diploma in Life Science/Ecology/Biology/Botany at NQF 6 with 4 years of work experience in Biobank Management environment or a Degree in Life Science/ Ecology/ Biology/ Botany at NQF 7 with 2 year of work experience in Biobank Management environment, and 1 year experience in research, procurement, logistical, records management, project and event management. Honours or equivalent degree at NQF 8  will be an added advantage.
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: knowledge and understanding of biobank operational requirements including the collection and long-term storage of biological materials; standard laboratory practices and procedures; data management skills and ability to operate electronic databases; must demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks; strong computer literacy with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including  MS Excel, Word and Power  point; ability to work  independently and as part of a team; excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent organisational skills and a proactive approach to managing tasks. The possession of a valid driver’s license with at least one year of practical driving experience and  willingness to travel and work away from home is essential.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:
  • Render Support Services within the Unit;
  • Ensure Laboratory Coordination and Sample Management;
  • Perform research duties;
  • Attend to Administration and Financial duties; and
  • Provide research support to scientist, and supervision to interns.
